For centuries brooches have been used to elaborately decorate clothing. First used in a functional capacity to fasten or secure articles of clothing, it’s believed brooches became more decorative in the Roman era. Later during the Middle Ages, brooches transitioned into ornaments, used purely for the adornment and decoration of outfits, a trend which continues through to today!

Brooches can be found in an array of designs featuring precious metals and gemstones of every kind. In the Victorian and Edwardian periods, stomachers became popular. These were large eye-catching pieces worn in the center of a dress. They were often a transitional piece made up of a collection of brooches, which could also be broken up into pendants and earrings. At this time nature was often the inspiration behind the designs, with flora and fauna being depicted through gemstones, enameling and remarkable handcrafted settings.

Brooches became smaller and more versatile in the Art Deco era, pinned in areas such as the left lapel, hat, collar or clipped to either side of a coat. The styling of brooches continues to look to history for inspiration as brooches are being re-embraced in men's wear. Recently actor Timothee Chalamet wore two vintage Cartier brooches to the 2021 Met Gala, pinned to his hip. The recent resurgence of brooches on red carpets and runways shows the timeless quality of the brooch!

Queen Elizabeth II has one of the most famous collections of brooches and is rarely seen without one. Since her coronation in 1952 she has delighted us with creations from Garrard, Boucheron and Cartier to name a few. Many of her brooches were inherited upon her accession to the throne and hold immense historical value.

Here at Berganza we have a large collection of completely original ancient, antique and vintage brooches, which beautifully display the handcrafted charm of unique pieces set with natural and unenhanced, hand cut gemstones. Choose your very own brooch, a versatile accessory, which is perfect for any occasion.
