 Description

Diamond foliate brooch. Set with one hundred and sixteen round eight cut diamonds in open back grain settings with an approximate combined weight of 2.30 carats, to an ornate openwork leaf design, with polished edges and open backholing, fitted to reverse with a a secure hinged pin, approximately 6.5cm in length. Tested platinum, maker's mark 'MW', circa 1950.

 Comments

An eight cut diamond has 18 facets in total and is reserved for smaller diamonds. The more simplified number of facets allow light to reflect in a soft manner that complements its small size and does not overpower its appearance. The use of eight cut diamonds excelled in the art deco era when smaller sized diamonds were needed to adorn brooches, pins and surround larger gemstones in cocktail rings. The use of platinum in the early 21st century and techniques allowed for these smaller stones to be set securely and enough to create intricate pieces of jewellery.
