Sapphires have been used in jewellery for centuries. Known as the gemstone of harmony, friendship and loyalty, sapphires are most well known for their alluring shades of blue. However, when other trace elements are naturally present, the earth gifts us a kaleidoscope of hypnotic hues.
This wondrous variety of sapphires are known as ‘fancy-coloured’ sapphires. This term is simply used to describe any sapphire that is not blue in colour, ranging from yellow, purple and orange, to green and more! Whilst the blue tone in sapphires is due to the presence of iron and titanium, fancy colours are caused by a mix of other elements such as chromium.
Most fancy-coloured sapphires are from Sri Lanka, often referred to as Ceylon sapphires. Yellow sapphires are the most abundantly found fancy-coloured sapphires in Sri Lanka, and their colour ranges from pale yellow and bright lemon to a rich golden hue. In some cultures, yellow sapphires represent divine grace and power. If your loved one is a ray of sunshine in your life, a radiant yellow sapphire is the perfect choice.
Exuding feminine power, pink sapphires range from shades of pale baby pink to vivid, intense magenta. Recognised for symbolising good fortune, intense love and compassion, pink sapphires are the epitome of femininity. Fancy-coloured sapphires also materialise in wonderful shades of purple!
Colour-change sapphires are quite the sight to behold. Dependant on the light setting, these fascinating, rare gems boast shades of purple and blue. Typically, most colour-change sapphires appear blue in natural daylight due to the presence of iron and titanium, and transform as if by magic to a violet-purple under incandescent light due to traces of vanadium!
The rarest of sapphires is the padparadscha, with its unusual fiery salmon colour, they are extremely sought after. The rarest and finest quality padparadschas are from the old mines of Ceylon, and we are incredibly excited to announce that we have a remarkable Ceylon padparadscha sapphire coming to the collection very soon!
