The romantic tradition of bringing home flowers to your loved one is a timeless gesture that expresses your affection and appreciation for that special someone. If she swoons over a bouquet of fresh flowers, why not immortalise the beauty of nature and gift her something eternal? Pick her a flower that represents her beauty and joyful character. One that will not wilt over time, but sparkle on her finger forever.
Flowers have been a constant source of inspiration to jewellers throughout the ages, and are a popular motif due to their elegance and unquestionable beauty. Whether it be the impressive splendour of a Victorian diamond coronet cluster, the bold statement of a 1980’s Oscar Heyman ring, or even the elegance of a floral brooch- you’ll be sure to find the perfect flower for your loved one in our vast collection.
In the Victorian era, different flowers had varying symbolic meanings. For example, pink flowers expressed a blushing romance! Wedding bands were also engraved with ivy leaves or ferns, symbolic of fidelity and the secret bond of love. Moving into the Edwardian period, laurel wreaths and garlands were popular. Craftsman in this era also created unique flower motifs using cluster settings and scalloped edgings.
In the Art Noveau era, they experimented with flowers that had not previously been common in jewellery design such as water lilies, poppies, and fuchsias. The designs were feminine, whimsical and often featured enamel. Plique-à-jour was a type of enamel work in which there was no backing metalwork. The design was outlined in metal and filled with a range of coloured translucent enamels, creating a similar effect to that of a stained glass window- a skill which only a handful to this day can do! This technique truly made the floral designs of the day come to life.
As we move into the Art Deco period, we see floral motifs take form in geometric shapes, a style that this era is strongly recognised for. Diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies were the favored gemstones. The Art Deco period also saw floral designs being carved directly into softer gemstones!
Saying it with flowers has been passed down throughout the centuries. From fancy coloured sapphires and classic diamond clusters for an idyllic spring engagement… to a pair of floral drop earrings that are a perfect gift for this season- Berganza are here to help you pick the perfect flower.
