This month we are celebrating diamonds in all their beauty and those lucky enough to be born in April who have this incredible gem as their birthstone. Diamonds have been prized for their unique physical attributes including hardness, brilliance and dazzling sparkle for millennia.  Formed of crystallized carbon, they are the hardest substance on earth.  It is unsurprising then that diamonds have long been the symbol of strength, invincibility and eternal love.

The first significant source of diamonds was found in India, more specifically a region known as Golconda. Golconda diamonds are particularly prized for their lack of impurities, resulting in colourless diamonds of supreme clarity and brilliance. Type II diamonds are extremely rare and contain little or no nitrogen and make up less than 2% of all gem diamonds. These diamonds are sub categorised into two types, IIa and IIb. Type IIa diamonds are the most chemically pure type of diamond and often have exceptional optical transparency and most originate from the Golconda region.

As skills and technology changed throughout time, the cutting and fashioning of diamonds developed, making available an array of shapes and cuts. Whether you are charmed by the rose cut, enamoured by the old mine diamond, captivated by the old cut or enticed by the geometric shapes of the step cut, the diamond provides a versatile choice suitable for all. Not only can the diamond be found in all shapes and sizes, but it also features an impressive range of colours. Diamonds of the coloured variety are known as fancy coloured diamonds. For those who love a vibrant colour, diamonds can be found in bright yellows, green, tantalizing pinks and majestic cognac. Coloured diamonds which display even a hint of colouration are therefore extremely rare and prized for their rarity and outstanding beauty.
