The Best of British

In every corner of Great Britain, incredible talent and exquisite craftsmanship can be found. Here at Berganza, we have a fine collection of pieces by British makers, displaying the rich jewellery heritage of our country.

In the heart of London in the late 1950’s, David Morris was founded. Morris first rose to fame through his one-off commissions for a number of Bond films such as ‘Diamonds are Forever’, and continued to design glamorous jewels for many years to come. In our current collection, we have exceptionally unique pieces by this wonderful British firm, including a vintage brown diamond ring, and a statement pair of 1970’s coral and gold earrings!

We are also proud to have a beautiful Edwardian ruby and diamond triple cluster ring from yet another London based firm, Laurie & Lazarus. Established in 1898 as china and glass agents, they went on to be registered as gold and silver workers with the Goldsmiths' Company. However, the partnership came to an end in 1913. As the firm were active for only a short period of 15 years, this ring is a true rarity and a remarkable find!

Within our vaults also lies a selection of pieces from Saunders & Shepherd. Based in London as a silversmiths and jewellers, the firm were established in 1869, and remain active today. One of their most famous inventions, was the self-closing bracelet, created in 1889. Nearly one hundred years later in 1981, they were commissioned by Lady Diana Spencer to make an 18 carat gold bracelet which she wore on her wedding day! We are delighted to present two pieces by this maker; a timeless ruby and diamond five stone ring, and an utterly unique Victorian diamond three stone ring.

As we move north to Birmingham, we find the firm of Alabaster & Wilson. Established in 1887, the company remained a true family business until they ceased manufacturing jewellery in 2018. Demonstrating detailed craftsmanship, we are privileged to have a selection of Alabaster & Wilson rings in our collection, including a 1930’s sapphire and diamond coronet cluster, and a statement 1960’s diamond cluster!

Another Birmingham based company, Henry Griffith & Sons, was established in 1850, moving from the jewellery quarter in 1923 to Leamington Spa. They produced high quality jewellery until the 1960's, and we are most fortunate to have an array of their work in our collection. Pieces include a unique sapphire and diamond cluster ring, and a wonderful Victorian ruby pendant, that can also be worn as a brooch!

Delve into our collection to discover many more British makers, including Wilson & Sharp, established in 1889 and based both in London and Edinburgh! This British maker's skill is demonstrated in the intricate detail of a dazzling Edwardian diamond cluster ring, original to 1906! Or how about William Devenport? Who once upon a time in Victorian Birmingham, handcrafted a mesmerising diamond cluster ring that could be yours today.
