Target Rings

Target rings were originally developed during the Edwardian era and are remarkably striking in design. Their distinctive circular appearance with radiating concentric circles, beautifully combines the framework of a cluster ring and the elegance of a solitaire.

Historically target rings were presented as love tokens, with each gemstone concealing a particular meaning. The first target rings can be seen in Edwardian rings, which illustrates the popular romantic sentiments of the time- the symbolic heart or bull’s eye shot by Cupid’s arrow.

The earliest target rings were set with rubies in combination with diamonds. Rubies were thought to represent passionate love- a very appropriate sentiment for a love token! References 20923, 21501 and 20937 from the Edwardian and Art Deco periods showcase the ruby set target ring’s charm and character.

One also sees target rings set with sapphires, a gemstone known to represent wisdom, but also believed to bring protection to the wearer and good fortune, see reference 21282. All diamond set target rings, such as 20951 and 21334 were popular, boasting never-ending sparkle and symbolise love lasting an eternity.

Each target is an incredibly complex creation, a true testament to both the skilled stone cutter (lapidary) who fashioned each calibré cut gemstone with minute precision and then the craftsman who created the intricacies of the setting.
