Following the glamour of this weekend’s Golden Globes Awards, we at Berganza are taking a look at iconic jewellery from the movies and celebrating red carpet style.
Of the most memorable jewellery from the movies, one of the most enduring must be the necklace "Satine" for Nicole Kidman's role in Academy Award winning film "Moulin Rouge" directed by Baz Luhrmann. Though the movie's musical numbers totally captivated audiences, the characters' costumes stole the show, in particular the magnificent diamond set collar necklace.
Commissioned by Baz Luhrmann and designed by Stefano Canturi, the intricate design was, at the time, the most expensive piece of jewellery ever specifically created for a film, at over $1 million. Featuring 1,308 diamonds set in platinum with flowing openwork lace patterns and scroll designs with a 2.50 carat Ceylon sapphire clasp, the necklace took 4 months to be handcrafted using 100 year old techniques.
Blue diamonds were an integral part of the plot in both Titanic films, from 1953 and 1997. ‘The Heart of the Ocean’, also known as ‘Le Coeur de la Mer, is the fictional blue diamond set within an Edwardian style pendant, purchased to be an engagement present for the central character Rose, played by both Gloria Stuart and Kate Winslet. The theft of the stone and the subsequent relationship break is the central theme to the plot.
Three very similar necklaces were created for the film but with distinguishable differences. They were designed by London based jewellers Asprey & Garrard in an Edwardian style, with two of the original necklaces appearing in the film, the third remaining unused. After the remarkable success of the film, Asprey & Garrard were commissioned to create an authentic ‘Heart of the Ocean’ necklace. The result was a heart shape Ceylon sapphire of 171 carats surrounded by 103 diamonds, set in platinum. The chain featuring a mix of round, pear and marquise cut white diamonds.
The necklace was donated to the auction house Sotheby’s for an auction benefitting the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and Southern California’s Aid for AIDS, raising $1.4 million, though under the agreement that two nights later the singer Celine Dion would be able to wear it for the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony.
