 Description

Medieval turquoise stirrup ring. Set with an oval cabochon natural turquoise in a closed back rubover and claw setting, to an impressive stirrup design featuring a raised bezel with a quatrefoil design, a carved gallery and closed backholing, leading to tapering chamfered shoulders and flowing through to a solid shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 15th century.

This ring was discovered in Suffolk in the 1990's, and was recorded by the Suffolk Archaeological Unit.

Turquoise was believed to have amuletic properties relating to healing, and to offer protection to horse riders from falls and injuries.
