 Description

J.E.Caldwell vintage ruby and diamond cocktail ring. Set with twenty round old cut natural unenhanced Burmese rubies in open back claw settings with a combined approximate weight of 2.50 carats, combined with twenty round brilliant cut diamonds in open back claw settings with a combined approximate weight of 1.50 carats, to a bombé shaped tapering cluster of five petalled flowers, featuring curving claws, a smoothly conforming gallery and ornate open backholing, flanked by curved shoulders leading through to a solid D-shape shank. Marked platinum and iridium, signed 'J.E.C. & Co', engraved 'M.A.D. 12-25-58', numbered 'W4392', American, circa 1950.

While Europe faced a period of rationing and austerity in the post-war years, the United States in contrast was experiencing growth and extravagance, as they fast became the biggest consumer of high-end jewellery. The 50s and 60s are frequently characterised by eclectic creations influenced by Hollywood-inspired pastiches of bygone eras, as shown in this striking J.E. Caldwell ring.
