 Description

Yellow diamond five stone ring. Set horizontally with five cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back claw settings with a combined approximate weight of 0.85 carats, to an elegant five stone design featuring curving claws, an ornately carved gallery with scrolling motifs and open backholing, leading to carved shoulders and flowing through to a solid D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, maker's mark 'NL' for Nathan Lyons, full hallmarks for London, English, 1916.

 Comments

The scarcity of coloured diamonds means that, while cherished, they have been viewed as curiosities throughout history, making them somewhat of a rare occurrence in antique jewellery.

 Provenance

Originally owned by Doris Mary Stocker (1886-1968), a British actress and singer. She was known to be a comedy actress of considerable ability and charm. Doris Stocker went on to be Lady Segrave when she married Sir Henry Segrave (1896–1930), in Marylebone, London, on 4 October 1917. At the time Sir Henry was serving in the war as a Captain in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and the Royal Flying Corps.

Sir Henry was an early British pioneer in land speed and water speed. He set three land and one water record, and was the first person to hold both titles simultaneously and the first person to travel at over 200 miles per hour (320 km/h) in a land vehicle.

He tragically died in an accident in 1930 shortly after setting a new world water speed record on Windermere in the Lake District, England. The Segrave trophy was since established to commemorate his memory and is awarded to those with the ‘Spirit of Adventure’ for their outstanding demonstration of skill, courage and initiative in transportation on land, water or in the air. Previous winners of the Segrave Trophy include Lewis Hamilton MBE (2007), and Sir Richard Branson (1986).

The ring was later gifted to Lady Segrave's driver and housekeeper and thence by descent.
