 Description

Ancient Roman ring with hippocampus intaglio. Set with an oval hardstone intaglio engraved with a stylised Cupid riding a hippocamp with fish below, in an closed back Roman set setting, flanked by solid yellow gold tapering keeled shoulders and a D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 19.2g in weight, circa 3rd century AD.

 Comments

The hippocamp, a mythical sea creature with the front half of a horse and the tail of a fish, was closely associated with Neptune (the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon) and symbolised maritime power, safe passage, and the mysteries of the sea. Cupid, the Roman god of love, is often depicted in playful roles. Here he is riding the hippocamp, suggesting themes of divine protection, fortune, or the union of love across land and sea.

This ring was likely worn by an individual engaged in trade, naval affairs, or seeking Neptune’s favour for success in maritime endeavors.
