 Description

Stuart rock crystal love knot ring. The central oval rose cut domed rock crystal in closed back collet setting, surmounting a complicated love knot in gold thread, to a D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 3.8g in weight, circa 17th century.

 Comments

During and just following the reformation, royalists who wanted to memorialise King Charles I (1600 - 1649) wore jewellery with his initials, a crown or a likeness of him. Often set under rock crystal, they became known as Stuart crystals. Popular until the end of the period, they were also worn as love tokens and wedding jewellery, with symbols of love such as hearts, knots, and flowers within them.
