 Description

Victorian sphene and diamond drop earrings. A matching pair each set to bottom with a round old cut natural sphene in an open back claw setting, two in total with a combined approximate weight of 5.15 carats, set to top with one cushion shape old mine diamond in an open back cut-down setting, two in total, with a combined weight of 1.75 carats, further set with seven cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back cut-down settings, fourteen in total with a combined weight of 0.75 carats. The total approximate diamond weight is 2.50 carats, to an elegant articulated drop earring flowing with movement featuring claw and cut down settings, an intricately pierced gallery and open backholing, fitted with a secure hook and clip fastening, approximately 3.7cm in length. Tested yellow gold with silver settings, circa 1880, accompanied by antique box.

 Expert opinion

Sphene was first discovered in 1795 in the Ural Mountains of Russia by German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner. Sphene is also called 'titanite' and has rich body colours, strong trichroism, and a fire that exceeds that of diamonds.
