Eight Cuts

The eight cut, also known as the single cut, is an early diamond cut, first emerging in the early 17th century. As an important milestone in the history of diamond cutting, the eight cut marked a significant advancement in the art of transforming rough diamonds into polished stones that could beautifully catch and reflect light.

The Origins of the Eight Cut

The eight cut was typically reserved for smaller stones, often weighing 0.10ct or less. The modest number of facets of this cut were strategically placed to amplify light reflection, giving even the tiniest of stones a remarkably warm and soft glow without overpowering their small scale.

What is an Eight Cut?

The eight cut was achieved by refining the simpler table cut diamond by skilfully removing its corners to introduce additional facets that would enhance the stone’s sparkle. The result was a diamond with a round outline, featuring eight facets on the table and eight on the pavilion.

The Characteristics of Eight Cuts

Each meticulously hand-cut under lower light such as gaslight and candlelight, eight cut diamonds have a unique charm of their own, with a distinctive, classic look that nods to their rich, historical lineage. Their octagonal shape and minimalist facet structure make eight cuts instantly recognisable in antique pieces.

Eight cut diamonds are most frequently used as accent stones in antique jewellery, often decorating the shoulders of a ring or surrounding a larger central stone. The subtle sparkle of eight cut diamonds complements rather than competes with the beauty of the rose cut, old mine cut, or old cut that they frame, only enhancing the brilliance of the central diamond.
