Step Cut

The step cut is characterised by a square or rectangular outline, narrow table and elongated facets that descend in a ‘step-like’ pattern towards a larger pavilion. These facets are arranged in parallel lines along all four sides of the stone. When viewed from above, the facets produce a distinctive ‘hall of mirrors’ effect as light reflects within the stone, making it appear bright and dynamic.

What is a Step Cut?

A Step cut has a larger table and fewer facets than other stone cuts. Furthermore, the step cut’s configuration of facets accentuates the centre of the stone, making any imperfections or inclusions far more noticeable. Because of this, the step cut is typically reserved for stones of outstanding quality. Unlike the dazzling brilliance of round old cuts, step cuts offer a more refined, understated elegance that highlights the exceptional quality of the stone.

There are many different types of step cut, the most popular of which are the emerald cut, the Asscher cut and the baguette cut.

The History of the Step Cut

The step cut has a long and fascinating history going back to the early 16th century. The first cut to exist is known as the table cut which was created as early as the 13th century when the point of an octahedral diamond crystal was removed to create a table facet. As cutting techniques evolved, by the 16th century, long facets began to be cut alongside the table facet. This later came to be known as the step cut. Although this cut has existed for centuries, step cuts became extremely popular during the Art Deco period. The Art Deco movement of the 1920s embraced clean lines and geometric shapes, making the step cut an ideal choice.

In an era when all stones were meticulously cut and faceted by hand, the skill required to cut a step cut simply cannot be understated, especially considering the exacting levels of symmetry and proportion required to bring this incredible cut to life!
