What is an Asscher Cut?

Trusted with the cut of one of the world’s most famous diamonds, the Cullinan II, now set into the Sovereign's Sceptre of the British Crown Jewels, Joseph Asscher earned his name as one of the greatest diamond cutters of all time. In line with this exceptional skill, the Asscher Cut was an invention from this wonderful mind, crafted to create a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect to accentuate the natural beauty of a diamond.

The Asscher cut was the first cut of diamond to ever be patented and is characterised by its square outline, parallel lines and fifty eight facets. The cut is a derivative of a step cut, faceted in a square with elongated and angular facets.

The History of The Asscher Cut

Established in 1854, Joseph Isaac Asscher founded the Asscher Diamond Company after gaining great acclaim as a highly skilled diamond cutter. He passed his skills to his five sons, with two of his sons, Joseph and Abraham, going on to cement the company in the annals of jewellery history. His son Joseph was a particularly skilled diamond cleaver, and paired with the business acumen of his brother Abraham, the company flourished.

Upon the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in 1940, the assets of the Asscher Diamond Company were seized, and the patent for the cut expired. This allowed for diamond cutters on the wider market to explore this cut, attempting to replicate the remarkable craft of the Asscher company. Resultantly, original Asscher cut diamonds, pre-dating the second world war are exceptionally rare and are highly sought after by collectors.

Why choose the Asscher Cut?

With its clean lines and elegant linear flashes of light, the Asscher cut is remarkable in how it draws beauty from a diamond. Such diamonds are a vision from the mind of one of the world’s preeminent diamond cutters.

To invest in an Asscher cut, is to invest in a piece of true rarity. Such pieces are highly sought after, for their elegance the unique way they capture the finest dimensions and qualities of a diamond.
