The rose cut is one of the earliest stone cuts, originating in sixteenth century Europe. Designed to showcase a beautiful scintillation, the rose cut was created in a world of daylight and candlelight, cut by hand with the utmost skill. It is occasionally referred to as the ‘Antwerp’, ‘Holland’ or ‘Dutch Rose’ cut, as it was created amongst the hustle and bustle of Antwerp, at the time the most prosperous city in Europe and the centre of the diamond trade. Antwerp blossomed as it served as the meeting point of gemstones from the East and buyers across Europe, the name of the city remaining synonymous with diamonds today.

What is a Rose Cut?
A rose cut consists of a flat base and domed top with multiple triangular facets, drawing inspiration from the spiralling petals of a rosebud. The facets are large and symmetrically placed and the sparkle of a rose cut will differ to other cuts, as the flat underside allows for light to refract differently to stones with a pavilion.
