Knowledge
The princess cut, also sometimes known as a square modified brilliant cut, is the modern take on the classic square-cut diamond. With between 57 and 70 facets it features a mix of brilliant-style facets to the crown and pavilion and 4 step-cut facets along the girdle.

What is a Princess Cut?
This cut is known for its sharp lines which terminate at perfect 90 degree angles. This cut is inspired by the Art Deco era, a modern take on other linear cuts such as the French cut and Asscher cut. The princess cut usually has deeper proportions than a modern round brilliant cut, as the facets on the pavilion enable a bright scintillation when viewed from above.

The History of the Princess Cut
This modern cut emerged in the 1960s and became widespread from the 1980s, however it finds its origins in much older cuts. The natural shape of a diamond crystal is an octahedron, and several early diamond cuts followed this linear outline.
The evolution of the princess cut was facilitated by the availability of diamond sources, along with the increased ability to laser-cut diamonds, making the process of cutting a diamond more efficient and cost effective.
Why Choose a Princess Cut?
Ideal for those looking for a more modern take on the brilliant cut, the square outline has proved a popular twist on this classic cut making it perfect for those in search of an elegant, minimalist look with plenty of sparkle!
Moreover, as it closely follows the structure of the original diamond crystal, the princess cut produces less waste, making it a more efficient cut to produce and therefore more affordable than other cuts.
